  1. Overall Rating

    4/5 Stars

  2. Describe your race day.

Excellent race day. I was not in shape for a marathon but I greatly enjoyed using this race as a long run with over 400 of my running buddies. The weather and views of the the city were fantastic. ALL of the volunteers were also great!
I'm a veteran of FIVE UP HILL marathons on Mt. Lemmon. It's definitely easier on the heart running downhill! This was my first Revel marathon and I was very impressed with the organization.

  3. Did you PR?

No, that was NOT my plan today. I hope to return next year and qualify for the Boston Marathon.

  4. How would you describe the course?

Everything was great. I knew the downhill would be tough on the legs, especially the quads.

  5. Tell us about your training.

I just need to do more marathon specific training for next year. This year, I was in shape to finish but not to race for a Boston Qualifier. I signed up, at the last minute, after several successful half marathons earlier in the year. The of shorter strides (not over striding) and keeping the cadence at 170 to 180 worked very well. Next year, I plan to actually do more downhill (and uphill) training.

  6. What advice would you give future runners?

For the Mt. Lemmon Marathon, the best advice I received was to go out slow for the first 4 miles. Then, relax, focusing on stride and cadence! It worked for me, today, achieving negative splits for most of the marathon.
P.S. Thanks for the gloves. They were the only item I really needed for the temporary cold at the top!

  7. What fun things did you do in the area before or after the race?

I live in Tucson and there are always fun things to do here. It was great to meet other runners from all over the country. I am truly fortunate to live in southern Arizona.

Traffic control seemed to be the only major issue this morning. I arrived early to park. There were NO volunteers to direct us where to park. They arrived around 3:50 am. Later, I noticed that traffic into the La Mariaposa staging area was jamming up. Departing buses had trouble leaving the area for our destination. The 4 late buses to the top of Mt. Lemmon caused the race to start late. In the end, runners pre-race routines were really messed up because of the traffic and late start issues. The volunteers for directing NEED to be in place by 3:30 am if the buses begin boarding and departing in the 4:00 am to 4:30 am time window. Everything else was EXCELLENT. I really enjoyed my run and plan to do other Revel races. Thanks!
