  2. Describe your race day.

I am a trail runner and this was my first road marathon. I am accustomed to running with a hydration pack and carrying my own fuel, usually dates. I took a huge risk and decided 30 minutes prior to the start of the race to eat and drink off of the aid stations opposed to racing with the handheld I brought. My experience was phenomenal and I am so glad I made that decision. This event was so incredibly organized I will definitely recommend it to other racers.

  3. Did you PR?

Well, yes and no. Trail races are very different than road races. With trail we run a lot of hills, up and down. Mostly up. In addition to technical single tracks. With that said, times are not necessarily as fast. My time was a 4:33. I unfortunately had to walk the last six miles due to the pain in my left foot and the pain in my right IT band. However, that's not a bad time saying that I had to walk 6 miles.

  4. How would you describe the course?

The first portion of the course is super fast, and I was loving it. The final 13 miles tests your endurance and strength, it's rolling hills and flat at the end. Excellent combination.

  5. Tell us about your training.

Most of my training was on trail due to preference. I did a few long runs on roads that contained hills, and I biked long, fast miles for cross training.

  6. What advice would you give future runners?

Run as much up hill as possible. Run long bouts of downhill on road to condition the legs in order to avoid injury if possible.

  7. What fun things did you do in the area before or after the race?

Prior to the race the camaraderie at the trail head was energizing. It was even more energizing at the finish line. Ate a great meal at the Habit afterwards that consisted of a thick, coffee malt. Watching the other racers cross the finish was a blast.
