  1. Overall Rating

    5/5 Stars

  2. Describe your race day.

One of the best organized races I've run -- great logistics, volunteers and course.Favorite memory was realizing at about mile 8 that I *could* be in PR territory and by mile 20 pouring it on to guarantee it. Definitely the most beautiful and fun course I've run.

  3. Did you PR?

Yes! By almost 10 minutes. And I'm an old guy who set the other PR six years ago...

  4. How would you describe the course?

Truth in advertising: it was indeed fast and beautiful. Awesome views, especially on the switchbacks where you could see mountains, the valleys, and runners below. This course is FAST -- I don't think it makes sense to try to run negative splits because the first half is so steep/fast.

  5. Tell us about your training.

I trained properly for Marine Corps Marathon which was two weeks ago. That was *not* a good race because the chaotic security caused many of us to start late and I lost tons of time weaving in between 5:00 runners. So I chose Canyon City as my redemption. As they say at MCM, Mission Accomplished!

  6. What advice would you give future runners?

Take advantage of the drop bags so you can dress for wide temperature differences -- 40 at the start and 80 at the finish. You BETTER train on hills or you're going to HURT! Finally, this is about the twistiest course you'll ever run, and if you care about your finish time, you MUST run the tangents. I executed this pretty well and actually logged 26.25 miles on my GPS, which is pretty good because my last downhill marathon was almost 27.5 miles.

  7. What fun things did you do in the area before or after the race?

Got in late Friday from Denver and left Saturday. But I do highly recommend the signature burger at Father's Office on the way to LAX for you post-race meal!
