  1. Overall Rating

    5/5 Stars

  2. Describe your race day.

Super well organized with an unbelievable setting. I totally screwed up my own race by running the first half way too fast and then dealing with completely shot quads/calves for about 10 miles (idiot!!). I should have listened to other blog posts about that. Though I won't do the race again it's more due to the fact I live in MA.

  3. Did you PR?

I did not and, again, that's due to my own mistake. I did not BQ either and I have before which should tell anyone reading how the first half can trash the legs if not properly managed. I think the race could be a great one for a PR if the first half is managed well and/or for someone who has trained a lot on long distance downhills which I most certainly did not.

  4. How would you describe the course?

Super fast first half (set my PR for a 1/2 with ease) and painful 2nd half, especially the last 10K.

  5. Tell us about your training.

I live in MA so it's hilly but not anything like this course. I did intensive training but had to manage an abdominal pull about 3 weeks prior which shut me down for about 10 days. I was also not prepared for the heat in the 2nd half. I'd been running in 40-60 degree weather for a while so the 70's-80's was a killer.

  6. What advice would you give future runners?

This is an exceptionally well organized and managed race. Everything was clockwork and the scenery is inspiring. That said, if you are running the marathon be cautious with the first half and either stay with a pacer or literally dial back a full minute on what you are running. It will likely feel slow but will help immensely when you get to the rolling hills and downhills in the second half.

  7. What fun things did you do in the area before or after the race?

We stayed in Hollywood and Santa Monica which are both really interesting for this lifelong MA resident. Cali is like a different planet from back East so it was really interesting and enjoyable. Great food, friendly people, and weather to die for.
