    2. Describe your race day.

I ran the race for my mom. She passed away very unexpectedly in June. She was a marathon race walker. I enjoyed the course and thought of her all 26.2 miles.

    3. Did you PR?

I did PR. I took 15 off my last marathon time. Not good enough for a Boston qualifier.

    4. How would you describe the course?

      It was fun and beautiful.

    5. Tell us about your training.

I trained hard and it paid off.

I think friends and family should be able to be along the race course. People need that support along the way. That was the only thing I did like about the marathon.

    2. Describe your race day.

I met a lot of old friends, made some new ones. I also missed some —it would be helpful to have the entrant list on the web.

    3. Did you PR?

I’m 71, so an age graded PR is the best I can hope for. It was my best race of the year, 15 minutes under BQ.

    4. How would you describe the course?

The first part is very steep, but I knew that. I have run Hood to Coast. The setting was beautiful, surprising warm at the top. I took the first 6 miles at a very relaxed pace.

    5. Tell us about your training.

I have a 7 mile loop from home that takes me up a steep trail then down road with 1.5 miles steeply down. I do think the short downhill practice at top speed was a help. This was my first marathon this year without hamstring camps at the end! I did something right.

    6. What advice would you give future runners?

Take the first part easy. There are 20 miles left for pushing, which is much easier if your legs still work.

    7. What fun things did you do in the area before or after the race?

I drove from Corvallis, car camped at Sandy HS along with several other runners. That worked well.

    2. Describe your race day.

Completely unexpected, but very excited to snag my BQ.

    3. Did you PR?

Not this time, Mt. Charleston still holds that.

    4. How would you describe the course?

The best road marathon a trail runner could ask for.

    5. Tell us about your training.

I had a botched training cycle due to shin splints, but still managed to be able to rely on muscles memory from about two solid years of 50 mile weeks which always include speed, tempo, and mountain runs.

    6. What advice would you give future runners?

As in any race, don’t go out too fast! Keep meals to what your familiar with. THANK EVERY volunteer, they don’t have to be there!

    7. What fun things did you do in the area before or after the race?

Coming from San Diego, I was most excited to see PNW greenery! Shakeout and post-race runs on gorgeous trail we’re the stuff of dreams!

    2. Describe your race day.

      I finished!

    3. Did you PR?

I did! I had never run a half marathon before so anything would have been a PR. My goal was to make it in under 2 hours and I came in at about 1:47, so I was happy!

    4. How would you describe the course?

The half marathon course was nice. Very scenic, mostly downhill, but not at too steep of a decline.

    5. Tell us about your training.

Mostly was just 3-5 mile runs. I wanted to do some longer ones, but had trouble finding the time.

    6. What advice would you give future runners?

      Better training.

    7. What fun things did you do in the area before or after the race?

I hung out at the end of the race for awhile with my family, who came to watch me finish. That was fun. I live in Oregon City/Estacada area, so I did not travel very far for the race.

Overall the race was a good experience! I really like the fact that so much is included in the price of the race (shirt, hat, gloves, mylar blanket, food, treats and photos).

    2. Describe your race day.

Race was really good! Loved the revel signs along the course.

    3. Did you PR?

      No!

    4. How would you describe the course?

      Really hard at the end!

    5. Tell us about your training.

Training went well but until you run a course like that you really don’t know. Thought the guy at the expo did a fantastic job on telling us how to run the course. Really help me.

    6. What advice would you give future runners?

I would do more downhill training for the next one and weights

    7. What fun things did you do in the area before or after the race?

Went to Mt St Helens, Multnomah waterfalls, Pittock Mansion, Washington Park- Rose garden, Trillium Trail, Salmon river trail

The bus pick up and drop off needs work! You should drop the marathon runners off in the half parking lot! Also, should have had bathrooms (port-a-potty) at the bus pick for the marathon runners

    2. Describe your race day.

Getting to the start went pretty well. After I unfortunately locked my keys and bib in my car, I was given a new bib and it was reassigned to my name with no problems! Race was awesome and finish area was great in terms of post race food, picture areas and the ice- cold towels were nice. Unfortunately my bf couldn’t see me finish because he was stuck on a bus trying to make it to the finish area. We were told no one could drive there, wvrryone had to take busses. The bus situation, however was kind of disorganized and the finish area was super congested-epic line to get a bus after the race. Overall great experience though!

    3. Did you PR?

I PR’d by 22 minutes and qualified for Boston by 8 minutes!

    4. How would you describe the course?

The first 5 were pretty steep downhill and my left calf started hurting around mile 5. The next 5 were also pretty steep but maybe a little less than the first 5. Miles 10-15 still downhill but more gentle. Miles 15-20 were flat and 20 through 21 had a few long inclines.

    5. Tell us about your training.

I prepared by running an average of 40 miles a week, with a long tempo workout each week and a few easy runs, long run on Saturday or Sunday. I did some downhill running in Vermont, down Mt. Stratton. I did some cross training ( honestly not enough) - swim, bike, cross-fit style workouts maybe once every 10 days. I loosely followed the training plan on revel’s website with support from Coach Paul!

    6. What advice would you give future runners?

I traveled from NYC and got to Portland a few days early. We drove the course (which I recommend if possible) just to see what to expect. Weather was super hot in Portland but on the day of the race, starting so early - the weather was perfect! I never felt too hot. Not sure actual temp but maybe 60’s? My biggest piece of advice- don’t plan a long RV trip to Yellowstone for the week after the race. Sitting in a vehicle for hours is not great recovery. Take an ice bath, get a massage, walk around. It’s Tuesday (3 days post race) and I can still barely walk.

    7. What fun things did you do in the area before or after the race?

Came from NYC. We enjoyed a nice vegan restaurant in Portland- Blossoming Lotus. I got the pesto pasta. It was amazing. My bf got something with curry? Which was also really good. After the race we rented an RV to go see Yellowstone. In retrospect, not the best timing. Sitting in the RV for hours, then walking all over Yellowstone was not great recovery- going downstairs and downhill still super painful.

    2. Describe your race day.

I was disappointed and surprised by how few spectators there were! There were fewer people at the finish line that at local 5 k races I've run. It was very difficult to get to the finish location. Very few people to cheer you on along the race. Needs to be at a different location next year. Enjoyed running through the trees, route was beautiful. Did not like running on that main road without traffic control (a lane blocked). I thought the start time was a little too early.

    3. Did you PR?

      Yes!

    4. How would you describe the course?

Scenery was beautiful. Grade and elevation were good.

    5. Tell us about your training.

Ran the 1/2. For me, it's just get out and run.

    6. What fun things did you do in the area before or after the race?

I have friends who live in Portland. We went up the tram, biked around the city, boating on the river.

    2. Describe your race day.

Mild temperatures at race time. Beautiful full moon. Felt prepared and anxious to participate.

    3. Did you PR?

While I did not PR, I was 1.45 from doing so.

    4. How would you describe the course?

Did the 1/2 - awesome until HWY 26 then not so much. :-) Course followed at least one creek and it was wonderful to hear it moving while we ran.

    5. Tell us about your training.

Training for the Revel Big Cottonwood full marathon, so this normally would be a long run day, so this was a little shorter than scheduled but a nice break from what I have been doing.

    6. What advice would you give future runners?

I'm a rookie - got nothing here. Focus on enjoying the moment and the beauty around you. Tell the volunteers 'Thanks' along the way. Chat it up with your fellow runners and find someone to run with along the way.

    7. What fun things did you do in the area before or after the race?

Invited my son to run with me and we went into Portland after the race and did Voo Doo Donuts and, I think it is called Salt and Straw? (Homemade icecream - I recommend the Chocolate fudge brownie!!!)
