    2017 REVEL Mt Lemmon Marathon

    2. Describe your race day.

The race from mile 4 on was scenic and fairly easy. With the small number of participants, I felt like I was running alone at times.

    3. Did you PR?

I did not PR but I did BQ by 15+ minutes.

    4. How would you describe the course?

The uphill over 3 of the first 4 miles at altitude was difficult and relatively slow. The next 21 miles were an easy, fast downhill. The scenery over the first 25 miles is wonderful. Although more scenic, I found the course to be slower than the Revel Canyon City and Revel Mt. Charleston courses.

    5. Tell us about your training.

I trained on the Revel Canyon City course for 3 of my long runs so I was prepared for the sustained downhill.

    6. What advice would you give future runners?

Be prepared for the uphill at altitude at the start and put in the mileage on downhill runs in training so that you are prepared for the 21 miles of sustained downhill.

    7. What fun things did you do in the area before or after the race?

We came in from LA a couple of days early and toured Tucson and the surrounding area.

    2. Describe your race day.

This was an incredible experience, especially considering that it was the inaugural event. Everything ran very smoothly. And, I set a new PR by 6 minutes! I will definitely be back next year.

    3. Did you PR?

I shattered my PR in the half marathon by 6 minutes!

    4. How would you describe the course?

Very fast downhill. It felt effortless for the first 12 Miles. Then, it flattened out in mile 13 and I struggled to get across the finish line.

    5. Tell us about your training.

I focused on downhill training for most of my runs.

    6. What advice would you give future runners?

Definitely do a lot of downhill training. My quads were still on fire the next day.

    2. Describe your race day.

What a beautiful day for a half marathon in such a lovely setting. I don't normally feel better at the end of a half marathon than I did at the beginning, but that was true for this downhill race.

    3. Did you PR?

This wasn't a PR for me, but it was pretty damn fast for an old guy!

    4. How would you describe the course?

This course is Beautiful. Stunning views of Tucson.

    5. Tell us about your training.

I just did my regular training for a half--nothing special.

    6. What advice would you give future runners?

You'll need a few days recovery time after so much downhill pounding.

    7. What fun things did you do in the area before or after the race?

My wife and I stayed with friends who own a cabin on Mt. Lemmon. It was a nice escape from Tucson.

    2. Describe your race day.

Plenty of parking at bus pickup, plenty of buses, nice waiting area at start line with plenty of porta-potties, beautiful downhill course, plenty of aid stations with wonderful volunteers, nice finish area with a table giving printouts of our times and places, and several photo backdrops with time displays. There were also many photographers along the course and free photos.

    3. Did you PR?

It was the fastest half marathon I've run in many years. Twenty minutes faster than the RnR half marathon earlier this year.

    4. How would you describe the course?

      Gorgeous, and very fast!

    5. Tell us about your training.

      Nothing special.

    6. What advice would you give future runners?

We stayed at the Comfort Suites Sabino Canyon which was comfortable and only a few miles from the buses, and enjoyed a nice dinner just across the street from the hotel. Take warm clothes to the start area for the wait, then dress light for the race since you warm up quickly.

    7. What fun things did you do in the area before or after the race?

We drove the road to the top on Mt Lemmon and enjoyed refreshments at a restaurant there. Well worth it for the beautiful views and photo opportunities.

    2. Describe your race day.

The race started at 6:30 AM from 6,000 Feet. It was expected to get up to 89 degrees in Tucson so I under dressed and it was cold up there. The race director came over to me and asked if I was cold and said to go sit in the cab of the bag truck. It was great and I didn’t have to waste my energy shivering. I was determined to start off slow and gradually pick up speed which I was able to do.

    3. Did you PR?

No I had done a 1:37 at the Big Cottonwood Half but I came close with a 1:38

    4. How would you describe the course?

It was great downhill most of the course. There were a whole lot of turns and the road surface was not always smooth. Since we ran on the right side of the road there was a lot of camber that you couldn't avoid. Also you could not use the tangents which may have increase the actual distance covered.

    5. Tell us about your training.

I used RunCoach an online training program and added 3 downhill runs down the Santa Fe Ski Basin. I kept these short under 10 miles each.

    6. What advice would you give future runners?

Don't overrun the course just because you can. I notice some runners had and this hurt them at the end. Keep your speed down for the first couple of miles.

    7. What fun things did you do in the area before or after the race?

It was nice to have friends who also signed up. We were able to eat dinner the night prior and lunch together after the race. We all traveled from New Mexico I flew out the Santa Fe.

    2. Describe your race day.

Great weather and views. Well organized. Qualified for Boston 2019!

    3. Did you PR?

      It was my 1st Marathon

    4. How would you describe the course?

The hill at mile 3-4 was a challenge. The rest of the course was great

    5. Tell us about your training.

Long, I got injured and had to restart training. 5 months of running or cross training every day of the week. Cross training is the key for Master runners.

    6. What advice would you give future runners?

Dress for warm weather. Walk up the hill at mile 3-4 to conserve your energy, you will make up the time on the down hill course

    7. What fun things did you do in the area before or after the race?

      Traveled from Washington State
Enjoyed the warm weather, dining outside.

    2. Describe your race day.

Race day was amazing. After a few miles of climbing, the downhill started with amazing views of the mountains. Just breathtaking.

    3. Did you PR?

I got a 20 min PR! The course was so fast!

    4. How would you describe the course?

The course starts with a 4 mile climb, then is literally a fast decline the rest of the way! I felt like we were all literally flying down the mountain! The scenery was just top notch!

    5. Tell us about your training.

I made sure to incorporate a handful of long downhill runs. I feel like this helped to prep by legs for such a long descent. My only training advice is to practice and get comfortable with downhill running. This will make it an even more enjoyable run come race day!

    6. What advice would you give future runners?

My advice would be don't come out of the gate sprinting! Take your time and enjoy the run. The course will already speed up your normal pace. Wear well-cushioned shoes, make sure to bring layers of clothes for the start, and simply enjoy the ride!

    7. What fun things did you do in the area before or after the race?

We stayed in town, ate at local eateries, walked around a lot, and took in the scenery prior to race day!I traveled from Colorado for the race!
