    2. Describe your race day.

Got up at 2:00 am. Drank a liter of water. Arrived around 3:50 am. Got on first bus. Good trip up the hill. Bus driver took a few wrong turns, but quickly recovered. Got close to the fire so I was not cold. Appreciated the blankets and mittens. Started out quickly at a 8:15-8:30 pace. Enjoyed the sunrise. Loved running downhill. Drinking water at every station. Around mile 8 I slow to 9:16 pace. At mile 14 I really should have stopped at the restroom. Slow to 15:42 pace to mile 16. Thank goodness for the restroom at mile 16! Drink Gatorade and water at every station. Thank for the Gu at two of the stations. Just could not run any faster than 14:15 pace until the final corner. My training is set for the LA Marathon in February. I should have advanced it for this race, or just started much, much slower at the top of the hill.

    3. Did you PR?

No. I was 54 minutes slower than my PR set last March.

    4. How would you describe the course?

Loved the sunrise. There is one point when I looked up and the canyon perfectly framed downtown Los Angeles in the distance. The hills were a reprieve from the downhill.

    5. Tell us about your training.

I should have trained for this race instead of the LA Marathon in February. My longest run thus far was only 16 miles (on schedule for LA).

    6. What advice would you give future runners?

Wear a Nathan with a water bladder. Although there is hydration every other mile, I needed water much more frequently. I couldn't drink enough every half-hour to make-up for my thirst.

    7. What fun things did you do in the area before or after the race?

Beer garden after. Fire before. Posed with fellow Pasadena Pacers at the top. Carpooled with friends from Huntington Beach.

    2. Describe your race day.

First half is very fast; second half is very tough. Beautiful course, very scenic. The large descent on the first half is deceiving for the level of difficulty the entire route presents. But overall a good marathon experience and highly recommended.

    3. Did you PR?

Yes. PR by three minutes and a six minute improvement from Revel 2014.

    4. What advice would you give future runners?

Practice some downhill runs to get used to the large descent the first half of the race. Your legs will feel it come the second half.

    2. Describe your race day.

Early start. Bus ride is long and winding - if you get motion sickness be aware. Beautiful race, and definitely a very unique experience.

    3. Did you PR?

Yes, I did PR by 11 minutes over a PR I had set the week before. I went from 3:44 on November 1 to 3:33 on November 7. It's a fast course, but it's challenging due to the downhill.

    4. How would you describe the course?

If you're familiar with the course, it's lovely. The grade is definitely steep - but not so much so that you are constantly stopping yourself. Your legs will feel it for sure - even a mile in, my calves were a bit sore, and certainly much more so by the end of the race. One thing to note is that temperature varies widely in the canyon depending on shade. There were instant 15 degrees rises/drops in temperature depending on where you were. The first half feels truly effortless, the second half does have some climbing which is especially difficult once your body has acclimated to the downhill.

    5. Tell us about your training.

I did not do downhill training due to an aggressive race schedule, but I'd recommend it.

    6. What advice would you give future runners?

I wouldn't bundle up too much for the run itself. I checked my sweatpants and sweatshirt with my other stuff. Utilize the heat blanket and gloves. The gloves were handy for the first few miles. Don't go too hard on the first half because your legs will be sore - try to retain some energy for later in the race.

    7. What fun things did you do in the area before or after the race?

I didn't realize they had free tacos! Woe is me! Finish festival was fun.

    2. Describe your race day.

I set a PR for the course from last year and it was my fastest half marathon ever.

    3. Did you PR?

Yes, I PR'ed by 13 minutes on the course and over a minute over all my half marathons.

    4. How would you describe the course?

Scenery was very nice, not as flat as one would think. There are definitely some hilly challenges along the course.

    5. Tell us about your training.

I've been training for the LA Marathon with the Pasadena Pacers. We get in a lot of hills and long runs.

    6. What advice would you give future runners?

Keep warm at the start! Beenies, gloves and a jacket; anything you don't mind tossing along the way.

    7. What fun things did you do in the area before or after the race?

I'm very close (Pasadena) so I didn't need to sight see.

    2. Describe your race day.

Great!!! Love this race. The view is gorgeous, the run is well organized. It isn't too large, so it offers a different experience from the bigger races. Heard this comment several times.

    3. Did you PR?

no, but I have recently gone back to school to finish my PhD in nutrition so I was 10 minutes slower.

    4. How would you describe the course?

Great. I liked this year's finish line. Much nicer...

    5. Tell us about your training.

I run lots of 1/2 marathons and make sure I practice with hills

    6. What advice would you give future runners?

      practice hill running

    7. What fun things did you do in the area before or after the race?

I returned home for the weekend. Have house, husband and dogs still in Southern California. I got to visit home.

I wished that there would be a reminder to have runners leave gloves at water station. Remind them that this is a national park and it is a privilege to run in this area.

    2. Describe your race day.

Great event! It was a beautiful day and a fast course. My best memory was seeing my husband approaching the Marathon finish line in BQ time. He was completely spent and until he heard the announcer saying, "If you can hear my voice, you can finish in 3:30, but you've gotta pick it up!" This was the extra motivation he needed to BQ at 3:28:41. Thanks a million! We are from AZ and loved the event. We will share with our running club and hope to be back again.

    3. Did you PR?

Yes! I had a Half Marathon PR by 14 minutes. My Husband also had a PR and BQ'd so it was a fantastic running day overall. Thanks so much!

    4. How would you describe the course?

Pretty good course, a bit more climbing in the half than expected, especially at the end, but pretty and well organized.

    5. Tell us about your training.

This is my 6th half, I trained smart with 3 -4 days a week running. My longest was 12, which I recommend for anyone who has run at least one half. Many training programs have your longest run be 10, and it is simply better to go longer so those last 3 aren't so mentally challenging

    6. What advice would you give future runners?

Bring lots of warm clothes for the start. I should have had ear warmers or a hat.

    7. What fun things did you do in the area before or after the race?

Mexican food next to our hotel the night before, visited friends in Redlands and just chilled after the race. We traveled from Arizona and drove home on Sunday.

    2. Describe your race day.

Overall, it was a great day. Stayed local, got to parking and shuttle very easily and was on bus by 4:30am. The shuttle ride up was unpleasant. I was on a school bus and it was not a smooth ride. So, I was nauseous by the time I arrived at the start. That subsided quickly once I got off the bus though. It was very cold up at the top but I took advantage of the emergency blanket that was provided. After a long wait, I made my way to the start. Intending on starting with the 3:45 pacer. I couldn't get to her and so I just took off. I found myself running with the 3:40 pacer and kept telling myself, "you're going too fast" but I couldn't slow down and I felt fantastic. The mile markerun were flying by at a rapid pace. I hit that first hill around mile 13 and was secretly glad for the break in the downhill. However, that glee vanished as the course became more gradual in the descent and more hills crept up along the course. I took each hill and ran by effort knowing that I had banked several minutes on the first half. I lost the 3:40 pacer around 15 miles but I knew that was coming. By 18 miles the 3:45 pacer caught up to me and I did my best to stick with her. Those last 4 miles exiting the canyon were my most challenging. My legs were killing me and they were not too keen on keeping pace. I was getting pretty emotion by mile 25 because I knew at this point I still had a shot at a BQ. I approached the last 200 meters and could hear the announcer shouting that there was less than 45 secs to break 3:45. I mustered up every ounce of strength and ran as fast as my tired legs would go through the finish. I'm pretty sure the announcer was encouraging me on as I made the approach because it was so close. I made it through in 3:44:08. With 52 seconds to spare! My 3:45 pacer, my Godsend, was waiting at the finish and she gave me the biggest and best hug after I crossed. What an AMAZING moment for me!

    3. Did you PR?

      Yes and BQ'd! 3:44:08
I PR'd by 10 minutes! I ran LA Marathon in March 2015 and that was my previous PR of 3:54.

    4. How would you describe the course?

Intense! Beautiful & Scenic! First half was steep downhill grade at times. Lots of embanked curves. Second half was more gentle downhill with some tough climbs that crept up along the descent.

    5. Tell us about your training.

I tried to incorporate hills (up and down) and glad I did. My last 20 miler was 15 miles of downhill on a curvy canyon road followed by 5 flat. It was brutal and I barely made it through the run. My legs were destroyed by mile 10. As miserable as it was, it was critical to my success on Saturday. I also incorporated speedwork too. My schedule was to run tues, thurs, sat, sun. Speed was dusing the week and I tried to do more hills on long runs.

    6. What advice would you give future runners?

Train on hills! Up AND Down! If you think downhill running is easy...you're wrong! I trained on hills and two days later, I'm still having a tough time walking!

    7. What fun things did you do in the area before or after the race?

Not much, I'm from Santa Clarita and so I drove home right after.
