2017 REVEL Big Cottonwood Half Marathon

    2. Describe your race day.

Excellent.. Everything went smoothly. Course is awesome, my all-time favorite. Weather was perfect. Volunteers were helpful and enthusiastic. Great medals.. Post race activities were top notch: massage, excellent band, pancakes, pizza, cherry coke, and smooth bag pickup.

    3. Did you PR?

I PR'd in the half marathon. I also PR'd in the 5k and 10k en route. I qualified for Boston here last year, but wanted to try the half this year.

    4. How would you describe the course?

The best. I love to run downhill.

    5. Tell us about your training.

In Kansas, we obviously don't have this type of course, I just do the same training as I do for flat or small hill half marathons.

    6. What advice would you give future runners?

It's a little cold waiting for the race to start, so dress warmly. I ran in Hoka Clifton 4. They were perfect for this course.

    7. What fun things did you do in the area before or after the race?

I traveled from Kansas for the race. Due to work commitments and flight schedule I didn't arrive until Friday evening. Last year, I enjoyed a visit to the Morman campus.

    2. Describe your race day.

It was great. The out and back was challenging, but it was a good race. Well organized.

    3. Did you PR?

Yes. Missed Boston by 1 minute. Ha!

    4. How would you describe the course?

Downhill, but the out and back chewed me up and spit me out.

    5. Tell us about your training.

Average training. Nothing special. About30 miles a week.

    6. What advice would you give future runners?

Save enough gas for the out and back.

    7. What fun things did you do in the area before or after the race?

      None

Great course, support staff was first rate, amenities at finish line were great. Overall a great experience.

    3. Did you PR?

      Yes - by 15 mins

    4. How would you describe the course?

Beautiful route, flat section at the end was tough

    5. Tell us about your training.

Ran 8-10 mile runs down Big and little Cottonwood canyons on Saturday's. Training downhill is important

    6. What advice would you give future runners?

Keep your eyes up and enjoy the scenery. Know where the water stops are. Train downhill as often as possible.

    7. What fun things did you do in the area before or after the race?

Not much... lines were long. Loved the live music and the vats of ice water with cold towels was very nice

    2. Describe your race day.

The bus meeting point was good, parking was sufficient. Not enough space at the starting area. Potty lines were standing on top of people. Start was good, race was good. Multiple photographers was awesome, I'm excited to see my pics. The out and back section was ugly. Exposed, no shade, smelly by industrial businesses. The finish was good. Excellent management of gear bags. I liked have stubs to shorten the lines at vendor booths. It was helpful to have food there, although i missed having chocolate milk for recovery. The parking lots were extremely hard to exit from. It took me 30 mins to get out of the parking lot. The finish line festivities closed of the other exits from the lot i was in.

    3. Did you PR?

Yes, i PRd. My previous was 4:25, today i got 3:56. I'm not at a Boston level, and that's ok. I'm very happy with my Performance today.

    4. How would you describe the course?

Scenery was beautiful, and the elevation didn't pose any problems. The grade was really tough. While it makes it fast, i feel like i passed more injuries in this race than in other races.

    5. Tell us about your training.

I ran the Deseret News Marathon on July 24th. I then was training in general for one more full this year, but didn't pick this one until last monday. Had i selected it sooner i definitely would have trained on more hills. My plan involved 5 running days a week, with long runs on alternating weekends. 10-12 then 18-26 miles every other week. The mileage seemed to be enough, but i needed more hills!

    6. What advice would you give future runners?

      Train hills.

    7. What fun things did you do in the area before or after the race?

I'm a local. Went to cafe rio for lunch that afternoon.

    2. Describe your race day.

Everything was great, from registration to expo, and start to finish! I'm doing 4 of your races this year including the inaugural Mt Lemmon.

    3. Did you PR?

I did not PR, but didn't train to PR. I came to enjoy the race with a friend. It was his first Revel race and he will be doing more.

    4. How would you describe the course?

Beautiful and fast. Did the half this year after disliking the out and back section on full last year.

    5. Tell us about your training.

I don't really train for speed any more. I run at least a half most every weekend and enjoy the experience more now.

    6. What advice would you give future runners?

Remember your layers for the start up the mountain!!!

    2. Describe your race day.

The best race I've done by far. So much fun and so well organized. I will definitely be coming back next year. Big Cottonwood is my new favorite half!

    3. Did you PR?

      Yes

    4. How would you describe the course?

Beautiful scenery, first 10 miles are essentially all downhill. A few flat and mild uphill areas toward the end. There are several places where the grade is quite steep and it's hard to slow down.

    5. Tell us about your training.

I trained by running in a local canyon with hills to prepare for Big Cottonwood. This worked well for me. I also did a lot of strength training and I feel like that contributed a great deal to my pr.

    6. What advice would you give future runners?

Bring warm clothes for the starting area. I wish I had brought sweats and a sweatshirt. Get a hotel well in advance. Ours reservation was made a month in advance and most of the nearby hotels were already sold out by then.

    7. What fun things did you do in the area before or after the race?

We traveled about 2 hours. We came from Millard County in central Utah. We loved the Kodiak cakes at the finish line. We were looking forward to sodalicious but didn't know we needed money to pay for drinks and cookies and didn't have cash on us. Will prepare better next time!

    2. Describe your race day.

Amazing as always! Revel does an amazing job which is why I love your races. How do we ditch part of that out and back???

    3. Did you PR?

YES! For my fourth Revel marathon I have PRed every time!!

    4. How would you describe the course?

Amazing! I really feel like this race is faster than canyon city, even withnour horrific out and back! How do we ditch it so it's a milenoutand a mile back? There has to be 2.2 miles somewhere! Even 1.5 out and 1.5 back!

    5. Tell us about your training.

Trained the course every weekend to every other weekend.

    6. What advice would you give future runners?

Train the course! If you're coming in from out of town, good luck! I'd say this is one tough marathon to train for for out of towners due to the elevation, and the out and back. The only way to stay on top of that is muscle memory and training it.
