    2015 REVEL Big Cottonwood Marathon

    2. Describe your race day.

I was awake at 3:30, on the bus by 4:30 and at the start area by 5:30. Beautiful day for a race- clear, cool weather in the canyon. Revel puts on a great race! Everything is very well organized and efficient.

    3. Did you PR?

No I did not PR. This was my third fastest time (5 minutes off my PR) and I am pretty happy with that, considering all that has been happening this year. I did qualify for Boston, beating my required time by over 15 minutes.

    4. How would you describe the course?

The course is more brutal than one might think, given all the down hill. The loop through Brighton felt kind of brutal, coming off of the steep downhill, to go steep uphill at that high altitude. I walked a bit there, to save my energy. The part that I really did not like is the out and back on Wasatch. I live in Holladay, so I train in that area all the time and really hate that particular barren asphalt expanse. I cramped quite badly coming down Ft. Union and couldn't regain my pace, but all in all it was a great day.

    5. Tell us about your training.

Training this year has been difficult. I ran Boston in April, quite unprepared because of a series of illnesses. Soon after, I tried to make up for lost time and pulled a hamstring quite badly and couldn't run at all for weeks. As this race approached, the best that I could do to train and not re-injure my hamstring was to run down from Brighton several times to my home in Holladay, an 18.5 mile distance. Speed work and tempos just didn't happen. Oh well. There's always next season.

    2. Describe your race day.

Awesome! Great weather, good course, great support, great finish line organization.

    3. Did you PR?

      Nope.

    4. How would you describe the course?

Fast but grueling after mile 20. Remove the out-and-back around mile 20. This part of the course was unnecessary and a dead zone. Change the last six miles to a flatter or more downhill course.

    5. Tell us about your training.

Seasoned runner. Many downhill running, 40 mile week.

    6. What advice would you give future runners?

      Run more

    7. What fun things did you do in the area before or after the race?

Eat at new restaurants in town

Change the last 6 miles to make flatter or more downhill. Remove the out-and-back part. That is a dead zone and unmotivational.

    2. Describe your race day.

Really proud that I truly let myself enjoy the race and the day and the beautiful scenery! No stress, no worries.. All fun! I will definitely be back next year with the hubby! This is now top of my list of favorite races even above Disney! And that's saying a lot! Repeat in 375 days! Thanks to my new friends here from Black Girls Rock 50 States, Black Girls Run, National Black Marathons Association, Half Fanatics and all the wonderful Utah natives who made a point to say hi and be so welcoming! Half #23! State #11! #RunBigC #RunRevel #TeamB44 #HF8871 #BGR #BOTP #BGRock50

    3. Did you PR?

No but only because I paused for so many pictures!

    4. How would you describe the course?

      Scenic! Challenging! Fun! My favorite!

    5. Tell us about your training.

This was my 10th half marathon this year! 24 lifetime half marathons total and Utah is my 11th state. I am always ready for a fun half and I do one over the summer ever month and sometimes every 2 weeks!

    6. What advice would you give future runners?

Bring a throw away sweatshirt for the starting wait but otherwise be ready to have a fun day! I stayed at the Hyatt cottonwood and they shuttled to the start line and back to the hotel! That was invaluable! Want a good burger? Go to "Bout Time! Fabulous and great service! The bartender Sam called my by name the whole time there!

    7. What fun things did you do in the area before or after the race?

Visiting from Chicago! Actually Aurora Illinois! We don't have the mountains and I can't stop viewing them! Perfect vacation stop and next time I'm bringing my hubby! This was a girls weekend!

    2. Describe your race day.

Beautiful and very fast. It was my first one and it set a precedent for my next ones. Very well organized, beautiful vistas, and a lot of great people all around. It's a great amalgamation of the every-friendly Rocky Mountain running scene. Honored to be a part of that scene.

Favorite memories: meeting the cool people I ran with, running with the pacers, and trying to get

    3. Did you PR?

Yes; it was my first marathon (3:08:09)

    4. How would you describe the course?

      Hella fly!

    5. Tell us about your training.

Mmmm, not great. I really only kicked it into gear 3 weeks before, when really I should have already been tapering.

I recommend not doing a couch-to-road marathon. However, if there's a course to do so successfully, it's this one.

    6. What advice would you give future runners?

Drink plenty of water and eat goos and whatever.

    7. What fun things did you do in the area before or after the race?

Ate! Talked with other runners. I came from Provo and just headed back after the race.

    2. Describe your race day.

This was my first Half Marathon, everything seemed to be organized well and well staffed with friendly volunteers. The medal is amazing and I am proud of myself for finishing the race.

    3. Did you PR?

Like I said this was my first half marathon.

    4. How would you describe the course?

Very beautiful, I live by the finish line and we drive the canyon a lot. It sure seems longer when you are running it though. I love the downhill and the sound of the water running.

    5. Tell us about your training.

Mostly trained in the fort Union area. Ran twice in the canyon two weeks before the race. I will definitely train more in the canyon next year for two reasons. First it is good for the calf muscles and second it is just so beautiful and cooler weather.

    6. What advice would you give future runners?

Train on any downhill you can. Wear half size bigger shoe than normal. Lots of great dining areas in the area, we live right here so I eat at many of them. It was great weather this year and since I had the luxury of training in the canyon I knew I would not need a jacket. But I heard last year was cold so layers are always a good idea. Maybe for lodging having a link for the locals to advertise bedrooms for race travelers to rent cheap or free just to help them out with expenses.

    7. What fun things did you do in the area before or after the race?

Went home and took a long bath. I traveled 1.5 miles :)

    2. Describe your race day.

I am really pleased with my experience running this race. The course was beautiful and fast. Very well organized and great support to make this a memorable day.

    3. Did you PR?

Yes, for this year of 2015, my PR BY 11 minutes.

    4. Tell us about your training.

I ran this race to prepare for St. George in 3 weeks.

    5. What advice would you give future runners?

The down hill is fast and really hard on your quads. Don't go out too fast. There's plenty of time to maintain a good pace. After the down hill, your legs will feel like sludge on the small hills and flat at the end of the race

    6. What fun things did you do in the area before or after the race?

I came from Idaho Falls Idaho. The entire experience was enjoyable

    2. Describe your race day.

The first 18 miles are the most beautiful course I've ever seen! I loved it! And I rsn with great friends.

    3. Did you PR?

No--but I live at sea level and the closest thing to a hill I have to run on is s highway overpass! So I couldn't do much downhill training.

    4. How would you describe the course?

The first 18 miles were amazing! The very steep downhill at the start was terrifying but kind of fun. Miles 18-22 were pretty awful--blazing sun, ugly industrial area.

    5. Tell us about your training.

If I could train downhill, I would, but where I live it's not readily doable. I'd have to drive a couple hours for hills that would approximate this course.

    6. What advice would you give future runners?

Do this race! Carry water. Aid stations are reasonably spaced, but in the very dry climate, i and my running partners found ourselves with dry mouths and throats between stations from time to time. Bring warm clothes you don't mind not seeing again to wear at the start.

    7. What fun things did you do in the area before or after the race?

Went to Park City, toured Temple Square and Beehive House; also going to ride a tram at a ski area before we leave.

    2. Describe your race day.

The views through the canyon were so beautiful the didn't even look real. I loved running the first 9 with my friend and taking in scenery. Revel really seems to care about its racers.

    3. Did you PR?

I did but only because it was my first marathon.

    4. How would you describe the course?

A mostly downhill course with dramatic views of the Wasatch Forest with a smooth, well-marked course.

    5. Tell us about your training.

I did a three day a week training plan that I liked a lot but my area in Michigan did not make it possible to fully prepare for how downhill some of the course was.

    6. What advice would you give future runners?

Stay in on of the hotels that are partners with the race. Ours offered a shuttle right out the front door. Be prepared to sit in the cold before starting for a long time (we waited close to two hours). I'm glad I had worn clothes to wear while waiting because it started cool and warmed up quickly.

    7. What fun things did you do in the area before or after the race?

I came from Michigan on Thursday. When I arrived I drove to Pocatello, Idaho because I had never been to the state. Thursday night I picked up friends from Denver, one who also ran the marathon with me. Friday we went to the expo then drove the course. We stopped and had dinner at Silver Fork. We then drive into Salt Lake City and visited the Temple compound, the Capitol and The Cathedral of Madeleine. We did a lot of walking (probably not wise but it's so beautiful here!) I fly home Sunday morning but would come back to hike and explore more.

I didn't like that because I'm not a fast runner there was no pizza left at the end. Also, the aid stations for the last six miles had hot Gatorade. Not appetizing. Especially because I was not prepared for how hot it is here.

I loved it! I wish I could do it again tomorrow! Perfect weather, and I love all the extras you get with this race, from gloves to free pic and videos. I am hooked!

    3. Did you PR?

Yes I PR'd... Ten years ago when I first started running my fastest time was 2:11. Then I had knee surgery and got older and was averaging about 2:30. Today I ran in 2:09!!!

    4. How would you describe the course?

      It is breathtaking beautiful!

    5. Tell us about your training.

I seriously trained on the treadmill except for my long runs. I maybe would have trained outside and downhill more.
